The terrible news was confirmed by Culture Club personnel, who indicated that Boy George was utterly devastated by the loss.
Dinah died surrounded by her family, with George, now 61 years old, clutching her hand in a sweet moment of farewell.
While George cannot respond to the tremendous support and condolence letters, he is grateful for the outpouring of affection he receives during this difficult time.
George’s manager, PK, conveyed the family’s extreme sadness, saying, “I am deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Dinah, Boy George’s beloved mother.”
The entire family is inconsolable in their grief, especially George.” The message also expressed George’s heartfelt gratitude for the love and support he has received and a desire for solitude to allow the family to mourn and come to grips with this heartbreaking loss.
George O’Dowd, the boy’s birth name, is part of a massive family with four brothers and one sister. Jeremiah, his father, died tragically in 2003.
George has spoken openly about his terrible background, exposing his parents’ tumultuous relationship, with his father inflicting injury on his mother.
DJ Fat Tony, a close friend of Boy George, paid tribute to Dinah on Instagram. “God bless you, you amazing woman,” he wrote in a poignant greeting.
My heartfelt condolences go out to @boygeorgeofficial and the entire O’Dowd family on the passing of Dinah. She was a remarkable, stunning, and resilient woman.”
Boy George said in 2020 that his mother had been hospitalized for two days due to heart or lung problems. Fortunately, her illness was unrelated to the COVID-19 epidemic, and she was released into the care of her family.
During an interview with Lorraine, George expressed satisfaction that his mother was not exposed to the deadly virus while in the hospital.
“Thankfully, my mother is doing well and has returned home,” he said over the phone from his London home. She was hospitalized for two days for reasons unrelated to COVID-19.”
George expressed gratitude for the superb care the dedicated NHS workers provided, who went above and beyond to keep his mother’s spirits high during her hospital stay.
“I was able to speak to her on the phone, and at one point, the nurse was singing to my mother,” he recalled. She requested the nurse remove her mask because she couldn’t hear her. It was an incredibly heartwarming moment.”
Following her hospitalization, physicians advised her family not to renew Dinah if complications arose. In response, Boy George contacted his fans and asked them to remember his “beautiful mother” in their prayers.
“My beautiful mom is currently at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Woolwich,” the Culture Club performer stated on Twitter. She has a heart or lung problem.
She is stable, despite their determination not to renew her if the situation worsens. But how can they be so certain? Please keep us in your prayers! @LG_NHS.”
Boy George said in a natural appearance on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2017 that he had saved his mother’s life after she overdosed on medication.
Recounting the terrifying episode, he admitted, “I remember desperately trying to keep her awake, feeling confused and scared about what had happened.”
Reflecting on his parents’ strained relationship, George stated, “As early as the age of nine, I would tell my mother to leave my father.” I adored my father, but he was a poor spouse and father figure.”
“My dad had extreme tendencies,” George revealed his father’s explosive personality. We’d all go hungry if he lost his cool and threw away the entire supper. Unfortunately, physical violence was rampant in the 1970s, and our family was not immune.”
“While he could lose control sometimes, he could also be charming and witty.” He was a complex guy, and I didn’t appreciate my mother’s strength and perseverance until I was about 15 or 16 years old.”
The death of Dinah O’Dowd marks the end of an era for Boy George and his family. Her legacy as a remarkable lady, devoted mother, and source of strength will live on in their hearts and the memories of those she touched.
As they cope with this devastating loss, may they find peace in the outpouring of love and support from their fans and the rest of the globe.
