In April 2023, Richard opened up about his health struggles through his social media account. He revealed how three and a half years ago, he contemplated retiring from his successful comedy career, thinking he was at the top of his game. However, unexpected health complications changed everything.
“After one surgery, I had three more right after that. It was shocking and unbelievable, but that’s life, isn’t it?” Richard shared, reflecting on his journey. He underwent surgeries on his back, shoulder, hip, and shoulder, dedicating a significant amount of time to physical therapy.
In addition to his physical ailments, Richard received a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease two years ago. Fortunately, the disease was caught early, allowing for a slower progression. Richard expressed gratitude for receiving the right medication to manage his symptoms and even decided to shift his focus towards writing and acting.
A Tribute from Larry David
Larry David, Richard’s co-star and close friend, paid a heartfelt tribute to him in a statement shared by HBO. Larry shared, “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital. He has been like a brother to me my whole life. It’s rare to find someone who is both the funniest and the nicest person, and Richard was just that.”
Larry’s tribute moved many, and he humorously added, “But today he made me sob, and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”
