Jason Carter, grandson of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, recently provided an update on his grandfather’s health as they celebrated his upcoming 100th birthday. While Jimmy has been in hospice care since February 2023 and his physical health has declined, he remains emotionally engaged and aware.
“He has really physically diminished, but he is emotionally engaged and still having experiences and laughing, loving,” Jason shared in an interview with People magazine. The family initially believed that Jimmy’s passing was imminent, but he has defied their expectations.
As Jason put it, “God had other plans,” emphasizing how unpredictable his condition can be on a daily basis. Jimmy has been spending his final years in Plains, Georgia, the place where he and his late wife, Rosalynn, built their life. Jason expressed that understanding Jimmy’s current state is difficult, saying, “None of us really understand what it’s like for him right now… there are things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.”
Reflecting on Jimmy’s time in Plains, Jason highlighted the immense support he receives from the community, stating, “It is the place that has given him the greatest support… there is no other place in the world that he would be at peace other than Plains.”
Despite his frailty, Jimmy continues to be surrounded by love and support from his family and community. He displays remarkable resilience and finds joy even while in hospice care.
