In today’s world, it’s not uncommon for people to work tirelessly just to make ends meet. Many of us have heard stories about individuals who seem to manipulate the system, floating by without working and relying on others’ kindness. However, these cases are the exception, and for each of these, there are countless honest, hardworking people striving to support themselves and their families by putting in the necessary hours.
One such person is Bethany Provencher, a diligent single mom with an 11-year-old son. A few years back, Bethany made the big decision to leave Miami, where she had been living for 18 years, and moved to St. Charles, Illinois. She was looking for a fresh start and new opportunities.
Upon arriving in her new city, Bethany rented an apartment in The Magic City area and secured a job at a local IHOP, thanks to her extensive 25-year background in the customer service industry. Despite securing employment, she realized that money would be tight initially and struggled to fully furnish her new home.
One day, shortly before the new year, a special event occurred while Bethany was working. A celebrity couple entered IHOP and took a seat in Bethany’s section. The man was none other than Donnie Wahlberg, famed singer-songwriter, known for his time with New Kids on the Block, and his wife, actress and TV personality, Jenny McCarthy.
Bethany, a seasoned fan of New Kids on the Block, was thrilled to serve Donnie. She had a soft spot for Donnie and could hardly believe her luck. Little did she know, this day would be even more remarkable than she’d expected.
After finishing their meal, which came to $35.27, Donnie left a receipt for Bethany with a personal note. Next to a cheerful hand-drawn smiley face, it read: “Thanks, Bethany, Happy New Year. 2020 Tip Challenge.”
Donnie had requested that Bethany wait to look at the receipt until after he and Jenny had left. When Bethany finally unfolded the receipt, she was overwhelmingly surprised. Donnie had left her an extraordinary tip of $2,020!
