This is a pic of the room after my husbandโs best friend, Alex, had been crashing at our home for weeks. I seriously CAN’T EVEN EXPLAIN the smellโit was disgusting! Alex was doing renovations at his place, so my husband told him he could stay with us.
Since then, itโs been NOTHING but video games and parties for those two, while Iโve been stuck cleaning up after them. Gosh, I was feeling totally ignored. When I finally got a minute alone with my husband, I called him outโbut he just shrugged it off.
โOh, donโt be such a downer! You just canโt handle not being the center of attention. Itโs just one more room to clean, no big deal!โ
NO BIG DEAL?! Thatโs when I decided to show him exactly what NOT A BIG DEAL really looks like!
THE PLAN
I stopped cleaning. Thatโs right. If it wasnโt my mess, I wasnโt touching it. Plates? Left on the table. Empty beer bottles? Piling up. Socks? Scattered across the floor like some frat house apocalypse.
At first, they didnโt even notice. Alex kept lounging on the couch, and my husband was just as bad. Iโd walk past the mess, humming happily to myself, pretending I didnโt see or smell a thing.
Then, it started to hit. The mountain of dishes in the sink. The sticky floors. The couch covered in crumbs. The bathroom? Donโt even get me started.
After about a week, Alex groaned, โDude, your house is getting nasty.โ
And what did my dear husband say? โYeah, man. I donโt know whatโs up with her, but sheโs slacking.โ
SLACKING?! I almost burst out laughing. Oh, sweetie, you havenโt even seen slacking yet.
ESCALATION
I doubled down. Not only did I stop cleaning, but I also started contributing to the chaos. A little ketchup spill on the counter? Whoops, Iโll clean it up later (spoiler: I didnโt). A pile of unfolded laundry? Guess itโs part of the decor now.
Alex started dropping hints. โMaybe we should hire a maid or something.โ
And thatโs when I knew it was working.
Then, one glorious night, my husband reached for a plate to eat his takeout, and there were none left. Not a single clean dish. He groaned and turned to me. โBabe, weโre out of plates.โ
โOh, are we? Huh.โ I pretended to think. โI guess someone will have to wash them.โ
He gave me that lookโthe one that said he finally understood he was in trouble. โCome on, just help me out a little?โ
โNo big deal, right?โ I shot back, using his own words. โItโs just a few dishes. Not like itโs hard.โ
Alex snickered. โDude, just wash them. I donโt know why sheโs being so dramatic.โ
Oh, that was it. That was my breaking point.
THE FINAL STRAW
I stood up, walked over to my husband, and calmly handed him my phone. โSince Iโm being so dramatic, letโs make it official.โ
He blinked. โWhat?โ
โLetโs hire a cleaner.โ
He scoffed. โWe donโt needโโ
โOh, but we do,โ I cut him off. โBecause Iโm done. Done cleaning up after two grown men who act like teenagers. Done being treated like a maid. So, either you two step up and clean, or we hire someone.โ
Alex shifted uncomfortably. โI mean, itโs not that badโฆโ
โFine,โ I said with a shrug. โThen you guys can deal with it yourselves.โ
And with that, I left. Grabbed my purse, walked out, and spent the day treating myself to a spa and dinner.
THE WAKE-UP CALL
When I came home, it was chaos. The smell hit me firstโlike old takeout and regret. The sink was STILL full. My husband and Alex looked like two lost puppies.
My husband sighed. โAlright. You win.โ
โExcuse me?โ
โI said you win.โ He rubbed his neck. โI get it. Weโve been jerks. Weโll clean.โ
I raised an eyebrow. โBoth of you?โ
Alex groaned. โYeah, yeah, Iโll do my part.โ
And you know what? They did. It took them all night, but they scrubbed, washed, and even lit a candle to try and fix the smell.
THE LESSON
From then on, things changed. Alex stopped treating our home like a free Airbnb. My husband actually started helping around the house. And me? I got a well-deserved break.
Moral of the story? Sometimes, the best way to make someone appreciate you is to stop doing everything for them. Let them see what life looks like without your effort, and watch how quickly they learn.
If this story made you laugh (or made you feel seen), share it with someone who needs to hear it! And hey, maybe send it to that one person who needs a little wake-up call of their own. ๐
