The former co-chair of the January 6 committee, Representative Bennie Thompson from Mississippi, has expressed a willingness to consider a preemptive pardon from President Biden, should it be offered. This comes amid speculations that Biden may use his pardon power to protect certain individuals who could be affected during a potential second term of Donald Trump.
In a conversation with CNN’s Jim Acosta, Thompson stated, “The president, it’s his prerogative. If he offers it, to me or other members of the committee, I think I would accept it, but it’s his choice.”
Bennie Thompson Supports the Committee’s Findings
Thompson strongly defended the work of the committee, claiming both the staff and witnesses conducted themselves properly. He remarked, “I think the staff of the committee did a wonderful job; I think the witnesses, who were primarily Republicans, testified credibly under oath. They were not found to have committed perjury or anything of that nature.”
He further added, “We’ve had two years of review by Republican chairpersons. They found nothing wrong. We stand by the work of the committee. Our committee did a wonderful job. We shared our findings with the public, and all the people have to do is read the report we filed based on our review.”
According to reports, Thompson’s statements have stirred additional controversy surrounding the committee’s investigations. The committee was established to delve into the events that unfolded during and leading up to the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
As the chairman, Thompson played a central role within the eight-member panel, which was highly influenced by Democratic members. The committee conducted numerous interviews with witnesses and compiled substantial evidence. Their findings were showcased in significant public hearings which scrutinized former President Trump’s actions, as well as the insufficient security measures and political strategies that contributed to the Capitol breach.
Acosta mentioned, “Trump is suggesting that you ought to go to jail,” prompting Thompson to respond, “Are you concerned about him or the FBI pursuing you?”
Thompson Stands by the Committee’s Integrity
During an interview with Fox News, Representative Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, who chairs the House Administration Committee’s Oversight Subcommittee, alleged that the former House Select Committee on January 6 deleted over 100 encrypted files from their investigation days before the Republicans assumed control of the House.
These allegations cast doubt on Thompson’s assertion that nothing wrong occurred, as Loudermilk claims the committee “deleted records and concealed evidence,” complicating the historical documentation of the investigation.
Investigators disclosed that, prior to the riot, then-President Trump had requested military leaders to secure the Capitol. Yet, Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller stated there were no plans to deploy troops at the time.
The work conducted by the January 6 committee has significantly divided public opinion.
