Bobby Kennedy’s Granddaughter Kyle Kennedy Dies at 42

Kyle Kennedy, a granddaughter of Robert F. “Bobby” Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, has died. She was 42.

Kyle died on Sept. 21 at her home in Westwood, Massachusetts, according to her obituary. Her cause of death has not yet been determined and remains pending, the Westwood Town Clerk told PEOPLE.

Kyle was the daughter of Michael Kennedy and Victoria Denise Gifford. Her father, one of Bobby and Ethel Kennedy’s 11 children, died in a skiing accident in 1997 when Kyle was just 13 years old.

She was one of Bobby and Ethel Kennedy’s 34 grandchildren.

A Life Dedicated to Education

Kyle devoted much of her career to helping children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and people with disabilities.

After graduating from Georgetown University with a degree in history, she began her career as a teacher in New York City through Teach For America.

She continued her education at Pace University, where she earned a Master of Science in Early Education. Kyle later attended the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, earning a Master of Education in Education Policy and Management.

According to her obituary, her work eventually expanded beyond the classroom as she focused on educational reform and improving opportunities for children and people with disabilities.

Marriage and Heartbreaking Loss

In August 2012, Kyle married Liam Kerr at the Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston.

The couple later welcomed twins, a son named Conor and a daughter named Josephine, also known as Josie. Tragically, Josie died just days after she was born, according to Page Six.

Two years later, Kyle and Kerr welcomed another son, Declan. Her obituary refers to Kerr as her “former husband.”

Kyle’s mother, Victoria, also comes from a well-known family. She is the daughter of former NFL star and broadcaster Frank Gifford and his first wife, Maxine Avis Ewart. Victoria later became the stepdaughter of former “Today” show host Kathie Lee Gifford after Frank married Kathie Lee in 1986.

Life Changed After a Spinal Cord Injury

Kyle faced another major challenge in 2020 when she suffered a severe spinal cord injury that left her with long-term paralysis.

Rather than stepping away from the issues she cared about, Kyle became an advocate for others living with disabilities.

Her advocacy included speaking publicly about the challenges people with disabilities can face while receiving medical care. She testified at the Massachusetts State House during a hearing addressing discrimination in health care against people with disabilities.

Her obituary remembered her for both her work in education and her efforts to improve life for people facing disabilities.

Her Family

Kyle leaves behind her two sons, Conor, 12, and Declan, 10.

She is also survived by her mother, Victoria; her brother, Michael; her sister, Rory; and her nieces and nephews, McKie, Quinn, Jack and Caleb.

Her death adds another loss to a family that has experienced several tragedies across generations. Kyle’s father, Michael Kennedy, was just 39 when he died in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colorado, in December 1997.

Her grandfather, Robert F. Kennedy, was assassinated in Los Angeles in June 1968 while campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination. Her grandmother, Ethel Kennedy, died in October 2024 at the age of 96.

For now, questions remain about what led to Kyle’s death. Officials have not announced a cause, and it remains pending.
