According to forensic experts, popular interpretations of Jesus, whether they appear in religious art or even on pancakes and toast, may not reflect his true appearance. Over the centuries, countless paintings and drawings have depicted Jesus, but no one really knows what he looked like.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no written evidence in the New Testament that describes Jesus’ physical appearance. Additionally, no skeletal remains or other remains have been found to conduct a DNA analysis. However, recent advancements in technology and scientific investigation have shed new light on the possible face of Jesus.

Unraveling the Mystery with AI

Bas Uterwijk, a Dutch photographer and digital artist, used cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to create an image of Jesus. By training a neural network on thousands of human faces from different time periods and cultural depictions of Jesus, Uterwijk aimed to capture a more realistic portrayal.

Using Leonardo da Vinci’s “Salvator Mundi” and the Turin Shroud as references, Uterwijk adjusted the facial features to resemble a Middle-Eastern man from Jesus’ time. The result was an impressive artistic impression of Jesus, although not an exact likeness.

The Role of Forensic Experts

In parallel, British forensic experts and Israeli archaeologists took a scientific approach to reconstructing Jesus’ face. Led by Dr. Richard Neave, a renowned expert in forensic anthropology, the team combined the study of Semite skulls with modern forensic techniques.

By X-raying Semite skulls from the same time period, the team gained valuable insights into facial structure. Computerized tomography allowed them to visualize the internal details of the skulls, revealing their muscle and skin density. The team also determined Jesus’ approximate height and weight by examining the skeletal remains of Semite men from Galilee, suggesting he was a smaller man, standing around 5-foot-1 and weighing about 110lbs.

Additionally, due to Jesus’ occupation as a carpenter and spending much of his time outdoors, experts speculate that he had a tanned complexion and well-developed muscles.
