I burst into the room, my voice trembling, and Patrick’s head snapped up, his face pale as a ghost. The sight of him on his knees, his eyes red-rimmed from crying, threw me into a whirlwind of emotions—confusion, betrayal, panic. My mother’s expression was a mask of calm, though I could see the tightness around her eyes.
“Do what?” I repeated, my voice shaking.
Patrick scrambled to his feet, his hands rising in an instinctive gesture of defense. “Lena, it’s not what it looks like,” he said quickly, but his voice was weak, uncertain. I could hear the panic in his words, and it only made my heart race faster.
I turned to my mom, my eyes wide with disbelief. “Mom, what’s going on here?” I asked, trying to keep my voice steady, though inside, I was unraveling.
She crossed her arms over her chest, her gaze meeting mine with a firmness that made me uncomfortable. “I think it’s time for you to know the truth,” she said, her voice cold and calculating, which was unlike her.
I took a step back, my mind struggling to keep up with what I was seeing. The room felt suffocating. The last few days before our wedding had been a blur, and now, everything I had been looking forward to was crashing down.
“What truth?” I whispered, my voice barely audible.
Mom sighed, walking over to the window as though searching for something outside. “It’s about Patrick. And the situation with his family.”
Patrick flinched at her words, his face going even paler. I felt my breath catch in my chest. The tension between them was thick, and the air felt heavy, as if I had just walked in on a conversation that wasn’t meant for me.
“I don’t understand,” I said, my voice now a mix of frustration and confusion. “You’re scaring me. What’s going on?”
Patrick wiped his face with his hand, looking like a man at the end of his rope. He took a deep breath and said, “Lena, there’s something I should have told you a long time ago. I—”
“No,” my mother interjected firmly. She took a step forward, cutting him off. “You don’t get to speak for her. Not until you hear everything.”
Her words were sharp, and I could feel her anger, but I couldn’t understand why. Why was she so upset with Patrick? Why was he crying? And why had I walked in on him begging her?
My heart pounded in my chest. “What’s going on, Mom? Please. Tell me. I deserve to know.”
There was a long pause, the silence thick and heavy. Then, my mother finally spoke, her voice quieter now but still carrying a weight that shook me to my core.
“I didn’t want to ruin your wedding, Lena. But the truth is, Patrick isn’t who you think he is. He’s not the man you believe him to be.”
I felt like I’d been slapped. My breath caught in my throat, and my head spun. What was she saying?
Patrick took a step toward me, his voice desperate. “Lena, listen to me. I love you. I do. I never meant for this to happen, but there’s something I’ve been keeping from you, something I should have told you from the beginning.”
I felt a pang of disbelief in my chest. How could he have been hiding something from me? And why hadn’t he told me?
“Please,” he said, his voice cracking. “Just let me explain.”
But I wasn’t sure I could handle hearing more. The tears started to well up in my eyes, and my voice broke as I said, “Explain what? That you’ve been hiding something for all this time?”
My mom stepped in again, her gaze steady. “It’s not just something. It’s everything. Patrick’s family…” She trailed off, as if the words were hard to say. “They’ve been keeping a secret for years. A secret that could change everything.”
I looked at Patrick, searching his face for some kind of explanation. His expression was full of guilt, regret, and fear, but there was something else there, too. Something I couldn’t place.
“I didn’t want you to know this, Lena,” Patrick said, taking a step closer to me. “But my family… They’ve been involved in something illegal. Something that could ruin everything.”
I felt the ground shift beneath me. “What? Patrick, what are you talking about? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I was trying to protect you,” he said, his voice trembling. “I thought if I kept it from you, we could have a life, just the two of us. But it’s all unraveling now.”
My mind raced. Patrick had always been so kind, so supportive. We’d been through so much together, and I couldn’t reconcile this new version of him with the man I thought I knew.
“What’s going on with your family?” I asked, my voice shaking as I tried to process the words.
He hesitated before answering. “My family has been involved in shady business for years. Money laundering, fraud, you name it. They’ve always kept me out of it, but… I don’t know anymore. It’s all starting to come to light.”
I felt the floor drop beneath me. Was this why my mom had been acting so distant lately? Was this why she seemed so concerned?
My mother’s voice cut through the haze of confusion. “And now it’s all catching up with him. He wants me to help him. But I can’t protect him anymore, Patrick. Not from this.”
Patrick sank back down to his knees, his face filled with despair. “Please, Diane, don’t do this to me. I don’t want this life. I just wanted a chance with Lena.”
The tears were spilling down his face now, and I felt a strange pull in my heart. I couldn’t deny the love I had for him, but I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
My mother stood tall, her gaze unyielding. “You’re asking me to protect you from the consequences of your family’s actions, but I can’t do that. Not when Lena’s future is on the line.”
A tense silence fell over the room. Then, quietly, my mother added, “You’ll have to face the truth, Patrick. You can’t run from it forever.”
Patrick’s shoulders slumped, and for a moment, I thought he might break.
I didn’t know what to do. My head was spinning, and I felt like I was standing on the edge of a cliff, looking into an unknown abyss. Could I trust Patrick? Should I even be marrying him? And how could my mom have known all of this?
In that moment, something shifted inside me. I realized that, no matter what happened, I couldn’t let fear or secrecy dictate my life. I loved Patrick, but I needed to know the truth, all of it.
I took a deep breath and spoke, my voice calm but firm. “We need to figure this out, together. No more hiding, no more secrets. I deserve the truth, Patrick. And you need to face the consequences of your actions.”
Patrick looked up at me, and for the first time, I saw a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
“I’ll face it,” he said quietly. “Whatever it takes. For you. For us.”
I nodded, feeling a sense of clarity wash over me. It wasn’t going to be easy, but I wasn’t alone. And neither was Patrick.
We could face this together—if we were willing to walk through the storm.
