For the longest time, I believed I had the perfect marriage. Tom was the kind of husband every woman dreamed of—attentive, affectionate, and, above all, honest. He never hid his phone, never acted shady, never gave me a reason to doubt him.
We had been married for ten years, and not once did I suspect a thing.
Until that one morning when my entire world came crashing down.
It was just another normal weekday. Tom was rushing around the house, pulling on his tie while balancing his coffee in one hand and his phone in the other. He kissed me on the cheek, flashed that familiar perfect smile, and headed out the door.
Everything seemed normal.
Until I heard the buzz.
It came from his office.
I frowned. That didn’t make sense—Tom always had his phone with him. Still, the buzzing continued, a persistent vibration coming from inside his desk drawer.
A strange feeling crept into my chest as I stepped forward and pulled the drawer open.
A second phone.
I stared at it, my pulse quickening. My heart told me not to look, that maybe there was an innocent explanation. But my gut… my gut screamed something isn’t right.
With shaking hands, I picked it up.
The screen lit up instantly with a message:
“9:30 a.m., usual spot.”
A woman’s name appeared as the sender.
I felt the pit in my stomach form.
I knew. I just knew.
I shouldn’t have, but I dug deeper.
I opened the messages.
And then, my entire body went cold.
Hundreds of texts. Months’ worth of conversations.
They weren’t just friendly messages. They were filled with inside jokes, intimate confessions, and plans to meet in secret.
I scrolled further, my hands trembling, until I landed on something that made my heart stop.
The woman’s contact photo.
I gasped, nearly dropping the phone.
It was Lisa.
My best friend.
A mixture of rage, heartbreak, and betrayal surged through me, making it hard to breathe. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t even cry.
Instead, I acted.
I grabbed my keys, my hands still shaking, and decided to follow him.
I knew where they were meeting. The usual spot mentioned in the texts.
Tom had no idea what was coming.
At 9:30 a.m. sharp, I pulled into the parking lot of a quiet café on the outskirts of town.
And there he was.
Sitting at a table, looking far too comfortable, was my husband—laughing, leaning in, whispering to the woman sitting across from him.
Lisa.
She tossed her hair over her shoulder, touching his arm with familiarity that made my stomach churn.
How long had this been going on?
How could they do this to me?
I wanted to scream. I wanted to march over and slap the smug looks off their faces.
But I didn’t.
Instead, I pulled out my phone and started recording.
I needed proof.
For what? Divorce? Revenge? I didn’t know. All I knew was that I wasn’t walking away from this empty-handed.
As I zoomed in, I caught something that nearly made me drop my phone.
Lisa wasn’t flirting.
She was shocked.
And then, Tom reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black box.
My breath hitched.
No. No, no, no.
Was he proposing to her?
I had seen enough.
I stepped out of my car, my heels clicking against the pavement as I marched toward their table.
Lisa looked up first, her face draining of color. Tom followed her gaze, and the moment he saw me, his jaw dropped.
“Surprise,” I said coldly, slamming the second phone onto the table.
Tom’s face went ghost white.
Lisa’s eyes darted between me and the phone. “Oh my God,” she whispered.
Tom opened his mouth, but I held up a hand.
“Don’t. Just don’t.”
I turned to Lisa, seething with betrayal.
“How long?” I demanded.
She swallowed hard. “It’s not what you think.”
I laughed bitterly. “Oh? Because it **sure as hell looks like my husband just pulled out a ring for my so-called best friend.”
Lisa turned to Tom, her eyes filled with something I couldn’t place. Regret? Guilt?
“No, I—I can’t do this,” she mumbled.
And then, to my shock, she stood up and walked away.
I blinked. “What?”
Tom’s face twisted in panic. “Lisa, wait!”
But she didn’t.
She left.
I turned back to Tom, waiting for another lie.
Instead, his shoulders slumped. He ran a hand over his face, looking like a man defeated.
“I was going to leave you,” he admitted, voice barely above a whisper.
I stiffened. “So you admit it.”
He nodded, eyes red-rimmed. “Lisa didn’t know I was planning on proposing. She was helping me pick out a ring… for someone else.”
I felt the blood drain from my face. “Excuse me?”
Tom exhaled. “I met someone else.”
My stomach lurched.
Lisa wasn’t the other woman.
There was someone else.
Lisa had been helping him betray me.
I staggered back, my vision blurring with tears.
I had nothing left to say.
I turned on my heel and walked away, leaving my husband sitting there, looking like the pathetic liar he was.
The divorce was swift and brutal.
Lisa tried to reach out, saying she was friends with both of us, how Tom was unhappy in our marriage and she only tried to help a friend find happiness, but I never responded. She made her choice the moment she kept Tom’s secret.
As for Tom?
Well, the woman he had left me for dumped him two months later.
Turns out, she had been using him for money.
Karma.
And me?
I moved on.
It took time, but I found peace. I found myself.
And one day, when I least expected it… I found someone who actually deserved me.
