John Stamos Reveals Concerning Health Update on Beach Boys Legend Mike Love

Beach Boys legend Mike Love is back on stage, but a new update from his longtime friend John Stamos has raised concerns about the 85-year-old singer’s health.

Love recently returned to performing after the Beach Boys took a months-long break from touring. However, Stamos revealed that the musician is currently dealing with “serious health challenges.”

Despite those concerns — and advice from doctors, family and friends — Love reportedly remains determined to continue performing.

John Stamos Opens Up About Mike Love’s Health

John Stamos, 63, is an actor best known for playing Uncle Jesse on the hit sitcom “Full House” and its Netflix sequel, “Fuller House.” But his connection to the Beach Boys goes back decades.

Stamos has frequently performed with the legendary group since the 1980s, often playing drums, guitar and other instruments during concerts. His friendship with Love has also extended far beyond the stage.

On Oct. 11, Stamos shared an emotional Instagram statement about Love after fans expressed concern over the singer’s appearance at an Oct. 10 Beach Boys concert in Cincinnati.

“My beloved friend, father figure, musical hero and mentor, Mike Love, is facing serious health challenges,” Stamos wrote.

Stamos said he hopes Love will continue doing what he loves for years, but acknowledged that the future is uncertain. He also revealed that people close to Love have encouraged him to step away from performing and concentrate on his health.

“Despite doctors, family and friends urging him to focus on his health, he insists on being on stage,” Stamos wrote, explaining that Love feels he needs the band, the audience and his friends around him.

According to USA Today, Stamos posted the message before joining the Beach Boys for their next performance at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium.

Fans Became Concerned After Cincinnati Concert

Concern grew after video from the Beach Boys’ Cincinnati concert circulated online.

Footage showed Stamos helping Love walk onto the stage at PNC Pavilion. Love remained seated during much of the performance while Stamos and other band members handled many of the lead vocals.

Love still participated in the concert, providing backing vocals and interacting with the audience. At different moments, he could be seen waving and making a heart gesture with his hands.

Rolling Stone described Love as appearing “alarmingly frail” during the performance.

Stamos acknowledged that fans may notice a difference in the longtime performer.

“The Mike Love we see tonight may not be exactly the Mike we’ve always known,” he wrote. “But he’s still every bit the Mike we love.”

Stamos said watching someone who has always seemed “larger than life” deal with illness and aging has affected him deeply.

Who Is Mike Love?

Mike Love is a singer, songwriter and founding member of the Beach Boys, one of the most successful American bands of all time.

The group formed in California in 1961 and became famous for songs celebrating surfing, cars, romance and the California lifestyle. Their best-known hits include “Surfin’ U.S.A.,” “California Girls,” “I Get Around,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Good Vibrations” and “Wouldn’t It Be Nice.”

Love provided lead vocals on many Beach Boys classics and co-wrote several of the group’s biggest songs.

The Beach Boys became one of the defining groups of the 1960s, while their 1966 album “Pet Sounds” went on to be regarded as one of the most influential albums in popular music.

Love is now the only original Beach Boys member still touring with the band. Fellow cofounder Brian Wilson died at age 82 in June 2025, while longtime member Bruce Johnston left the touring group in March 2026, according to USA Today.

Beach Boys Previously Put Tour on Hold

Love’s latest health concerns come after the Beach Boys took a roughly three-month break from touring during the summer.

In July, Love described the hiatus on Instagram as a “short break to recharge.” About 30 scheduled performances were affected.

Several planned shows in September were later canceled due to what venues described as “circumstances beyond [the band’s] control,” according to USA Today. Additional October performances were also canceled without a detailed explanation.

Love had previously discussed some of his health struggles publicly. In a June Instagram post, he said he was dealing with emotional and physical setbacks while recovering from bronchitis followed by COVID.

No specific diagnosis behind the “serious health challenges” mentioned by Stamos has been publicly announced.

Stamos Cherishing Their Time Together

The friendship between Stamos and Love has lasted more than four decades. Love even officiated Stamos’ 2018 wedding to actress and model Caitlin McHugh.

In his emotional message, Stamos explained that Love gave him much more than an opportunity to perform with the Beach Boys.

“He didn’t just give me a place in his band. He gave me a place in his life,” Stamos wrote.

For now, Stamos appears focused on appreciating every opportunity he has to share the stage with his longtime friend.

“We don’t know what tomorrow brings,” he wrote. “But we have tonight.”
