Keanu Reeves Reveals Longstanding ‘Marriage’ With Winona Ryder

Keanu Reeves is not one to flaunt his private matters, but he recently shared a candid confession about his connection with Winona Ryder. It turns out, according to him, they’ve been ‘married’ for nearly three decades. “We’ve been married for 30 years,” Reeves declared.

“We’re Married, I Guess”

This isn’t your ordinary marriage story with a grand white dress and a bustling gathering of family and friends. Their marriage began under rather extraordinary circumstances, captured on a movie set filled with cameras and crew members rather than in a church. It happened during the filming of the 1992 movie “Dracula.” For a specific scene, the pair participated in a wedding ceremony led by real priests. “We did a whole take of a marriage ceremony with real priests,” Reeves shared. He jokingly added that according to both Ryder and director Francis Ford Coppola, they might actually be wedded “under the eyes of God.”

Francis Ford Coppola directed the “Dracula” movie and wanted the scenes to feel as authentic as possible. He thought using a genuine church would enhance the film’s realism and beauty. “Having the real wedding ceremony as it might be in that religion [Greek Orthodox Christianity] would be beautiful,” Coppola explained. He also mentioned that the scene felt so true-to-life that it seemed as though Keanu and Winona truly tied the knot.

“I Think We’re Married in Real Life”

While promoting their 2018 film “Destination Wedding,” Entertainment Weekly had a sit-down with Reeves and Ryder, where they discussed their quirky ‘marriage.’ Ryder disclosed that the priest’s authentic procedures might have counted them as genuinely wed. “So I think we’re married,” Ryder laughed. “No, I swear to God, I think we’re married in real life. We used a real Romanian priest. He did the whole ceremony.”

Despite rumors that the two might have had feelings for one another, they never pursued any romantic relationship. They remain strictly friends.
