Laken Riley, a nursing student from Georgia, left a deep impact on her community with her sudden disappearance and tragic death. On February 22, she was seen for the last time around 9 a.m. near her campus while going for a jog.
Visible Signs of a Struggle

Jose Ibarra is facing charges of murder related to Riley’s case. During his trial, footage was shown of Riley as she jogged around the campus. Not long after, Riley vanished, only to be found later with evident injuries.
Riley had been in regular contact with her mother, Allyson Phillips. As she began her run, she texted her mom, “Good morning, about to go for a run if you’re free to talk,” sent at 8:55 a.m. When Riley attempted a follow-up call to her mom eight minutes later, it went unanswered.
Allyson Phillips, becoming concerned when her daughter didnโt return her calls, sent a series of increasingly worrying messages. โCall me when you can,โ and then, โYouโre making me nervous not answering while youโre out running. Are you OK?โ Her anxiety grew when she texted at 11:47 a.m., “Please call me. Iโm worried sick about you.”
When she couldn’t contact Riley, Phillips reached out to Riley’s roommates, Lilly Steiner and Sofia Magana. They searched the jogging trail around 11 a.m. and discovered one of Riley’s AirPods, prompting them to report her missing to the University of Georgia police.

Further investigation revealed that Riley had made a distress call to 911 at 9:11 a.m., but the call was abruptly disconnected. When dispatchers tried to reach her, the calls went unanswered.
Her Final Moments
Tragically, Rileyโs smartwatch showed no movement by 9:28 a.m., marking the time her heart stopped beating. This deep loss sparked nationwide conversations regarding immigration, as Jose Ibarra, the accused, was illegally present in the U.S. since 2022 but had stayed pending his immigration case.
Riley’s sister, Lauren Phillips, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. In her touching message, she expressed, “The best sister and my built-in best friend from the very first second. This isnโt fair, and I will never understand it, but I know you are in heaven with the man you loved most right now. Iโm not sure how Iโm going to do this, but itโs all going to be for you from now on.”
A Beautiful Soul Remembered
Laken Rileyโs memory invites us all to cherish our loved ones and hold them close. May she rest in peace.
