When Anna married Matthew, she truly believed their love would last a lifetime. He was charming, affectionate, and swore he loved her no matter what. But as the years went by and their family grew, Matthew’s love seemed to have conditions. He wanted a son. He expected a son. And when life gave them five beautiful daughters instead, he snapped.
The day their fifth daughter, Lily, was born, Matthew didn’t even come to the hospital. Instead, he sent a short, cold text: “Another girl. Unbelievable.”
Anna felt like the air had been sucked out of her lungs. She was exhausted, holding their newborn baby, and all she wanted was for her husband to look at their daughter with the same love she felt. But he didn’t. Instead, he filed for divorce the very next week.
Although legally separated, Matthew refused to move out. He became emotionally detached, ignoring his daughters as if they were invisible. The final blow came when he shamelessly brought another woman home—right in front of Anna and their children. That night, without shedding another tear, Anna packed her things, gathered her daughters, and left.
She had no idea what the future held, but she knew one thing: she would never allow her daughters to feel unwanted again.
YEARS LATER… AN UNEXPECTED MEETING
Time moved forward, as it always does. Anna worked hard to build a life for her daughters. She found a good job, created a warm home, and raised her girls with love and kindness. Though times were tough, she never let them feel like they were missing anything.
One crisp autumn afternoon, Anna stopped by a local grocery store after work. She was picking out apples when she heard a familiar voice—rougher, older, but unmistakable.
She turned and saw him.
Matthew.
But he was barely recognizable. The confident, sharp-dressed man she once knew had been replaced by someone… worn out. His hair was grayer, his shoulders slumped. He looked tired, not just physically but deeply.
At first, Anna hesitated. She had spent years healing from the pain he had caused, and she wasn’t sure if she wanted to reopen that chapter. But something in her pushed her forward.
“Matthew?” she said softly.
He turned, eyes widening in shock. He blinked, as if trying to confirm he wasn’t imagining her.
“Anna?” His voice was hoarse. He looked at her like a ghost from his past had just walked into his reality.
There was an awkward silence before he cleared his throat. “How… how have you been?”
“I’ve been well,” she said, and she meant it. “The girls are doing great.”
At the mention of their daughters, Matthew’s face changed. He shifted uncomfortably, rubbing the back of his neck.
“That’s… good,” he muttered. Then, almost reluctantly, he asked, “How old are they now?”
Anna was taken aback. Did he not even know their ages?
“The twins, Mia and Sophie, are fifteen now. Olivia is twelve, Ava is ten, and Lily just turned seven last month.”
Matthew swallowed hard. “Seven…” he echoed, as if realizing how much time had slipped through his fingers.
Anna studied him closely. “How about you? How have you been?”
Matthew let out a hollow laugh. “Not great, honestly.”
Anna said nothing, waiting for him to continue.
“I thought I was making the right choice back then,” he admitted. “I was so sure that I needed a son… that I deserved one. And when that didn’t happen, I let it eat me alive. I pushed you away. I pushed my own kids away.”
He sighed deeply. “The woman I left you for? She left me a long time ago. I chased something I thought would make me happy, but all I did was destroy what actually mattered.”
Anna felt an unexpected pang of sympathy. She had once loved this man deeply, and though he had hurt her, she could see now that he had also hurt himself.
“I thought I had all the time in the world,” Matthew continued, his voice barely above a whisper. “But now I look around, and there’s no one left.”
Anna hesitated, then asked the question that had been lingering in the air.
“Why didn’t you ever try to see them?”
Matthew’s face fell. “Because I was a coward,” he admitted. “I told myself they wouldn’t want me back after what I did. And the more time passed, the more impossible it felt to fix things.”
For the first time in years, Anna saw something genuine in his expression—regret.
A SECOND CHANCE?
Anna took a deep breath, thinking about her daughters. They had grown up without a father. She had done her best to fill that role, but she knew deep down that, no matter what, a part of them had always wondered why their dad never wanted them.
“Matthew,” she said carefully, “our daughters are your daughters too. They never stopped being yours. If you really mean what you’re saying… if you truly regret it… prove it.”
His eyes flickered with hope and hesitation. “How?”
“Reach out to them. Start small. Write them letters if you have to. But if you’re going to come back into their lives, you have to be consistent. You can’t just show up and disappear again.”
Matthew nodded slowly. “I don’t deserve another chance… but if they’ll let me, I want to try.”
Anna wasn’t sure what the future held for Matthew and his daughters. But she knew this: life had a way of surprising you. And maybe, just maybe, healing was possible—even after all this time.
