On the evening of our wedding, Scott, my husband, was eager for some special time together, but I was just too tired and hoped we could have that moment a little later. Being the considerate partner he is, Scott gave me a gentle kiss and agreed to let me rest. Little did I realize, that was just the beginning of an unforgettable night.
At the stroke of midnight, I found myself waking up, with the bed softly shaking, and to my amazement, I saw Scott tenderly holding a baby. “Meet Ella,” he said softly. My heart skipped a beat as he explained she was his niece, and that his step-sister Maya had passed away suddenly.
“Everly, this is Ella,” he said, his eyes full of emotion, “She is my orphaned niece. My sister, Maya, is gone now. I only discovered about her a few weeks back.”
This night was the beginning of revelations that would redefine our lives.
“Everly, I was frightened you’d leave me if you knew about her,” Scott confessed, looking away from me.
“How could you do this, Scott? How do we start our lives on secrets?” I questioned, trying to contain my emotions. But I paused for a moment. “Scott, what are we going to do now? Are we… wait, are we adopting Ella?”
“I haven’t really planned that far ahead, Everly. Right now, I just want to take care of her,” he replied, evading any deep conversation.
The next morning, as sunlight washed over Scott’s grand estate, the weight of the previous night’s revelations was palpable. My mind buzzed with questions. Who was Ella’s mother? Why had Scott kept this a secret? What did all this mean for our marriage?
Understanding why Scott took responsibility for a step-sister he’d lost contact with was puzzling.
As we began caring for Ella in Scott’s luxurious home, our dreamlike marriage began to face cracks. Doubts scratched at my mind, fueled by uncertainties of Scott’s past and mysteries of Ella’s family.
Weeks passed, and the gap between us widened. I struggled with accepting the man I thought I knew versus the secretive reality. Scott made attempts to mend our trust, but my heart battled with feelings of betrayal.
“Perhaps we should consider putting Ella up for adoption,” I suggested carefully.
“Adoption? Everly, how can you think of that? Ella is my responsibility,” Scott exclaimed.
“Or find a loving foster family… someone better suited…”
“Is this a test? You think I married you just for Ella’s sake?” he questioned.
“Yes!”
“That’s absurd!”
Seeking comfort, I took Ella for a stroll on the beach, hoping the calming waves might ease my racing thoughts. That’s when I met a mysterious woman emerging from the sea mist.
Her aura was cold, her look judgmental, her eyes examining both me and the sleeping baby. Her words sent shivers down my spine.
“Scott’s daughter?” she asked, speaking in a way that indicated deep, unsettling knowledge.
I found myself hesitating, unsure of how to handle this stranger who seemed to have insight into Scott that even I didn’t possess. Could she unlock the secrets straining our marriage?
With worry hanging over me like a storm cloud, I vowed to uncover the truth, no matter what it took.
Upon returning home, I demanded Scott tell me the truth, and he finally admitted Ella was his own daughter. In shock, I packed up and left the mansion.
Despite the storm of emotions, a spark of hope kindled within me. I recognized Scott’s deep affection for Ella, which softened my feelings of betrayal and gently pulled me back to forgive him.
Just as we began healing, a puzzling message arrived, bringing new doubts to light.
“Maya isn’t Scott’s only secret,” the message warned.
The idea that Ella was not the only secret jolted our already shaken world.
Braving a decision, I followed the letter’s instructions. “Meet me at Brown Beans Café,” a voice instructed. “Don’t tell Scott.”
“I’m Scott’s ex-wife… and here is Renee, our baby,” she said when we met at the café.
“S–Scott’s ex-wife??” I stammered, my heart heavy with despair.
“Listen, Everly, you’re in danger. Scott’s using you,” she revealed.
I was stunned. “Why would he do this? How did you even find out?” I asked, feeling a chill deep within my soul.
“Maya discovered it. When she attempted to speak out, her ‘accident’ occurred,” she said under her breath. “Be cautious. Don’t reveal anything to Scott. Pretend. We’ll formulate a plan.”
A short time later, I found out I was pregnant. I only confessed this to Scott after I had terminated the pregnancy, haunted by Amanda’s cautioning about a sinister cult.
Scott was so enraged by this decision that his aggression bubbled over just as the police knocked. Amanda was with them, a reassuring presence.
With a smile, I looked past my home, past the police…toward the camera.
“And…cut! Perfect!” shouted the director. I laughed with Scott, my actual husband and co-star, who beamed with pride over my acting.
“You were amazing, Everly… I couldn’t be prouder!” he exclaimed with shining eyes.
