Nickelodeon Star Dies at 46

Christy Knowings, an actress and comedian best known for appearing on Nickelodeonโ€™s hit sketch comedy seriesย All That, has died at the age of 46.

TMZย reported that Knowings died on Tuesday, Aug. 11, after suffering an asthma attack days earlier. The outlet cited a family member who said Knowings was hospitalized on Friday, Aug. 7, and placed on life support at a hospital in the Los Angeles area.

She remained hospitalized for several days before her death. Additional details about the circumstances surrounding her death were not immediately available.

Knowings became familiar to a generation of young television viewers when she joinedย All Thatย in 1997. She appeared in more than 30 episodes before making her final appearance on the series in 1999.

Her Years onย All That

All Thatย was one of Nickelodeonโ€™s biggest shows of the 1990s and was often described as a kid-friendly version ofย Saturday Night Live. Instead of following one continuing story, each episode featured a collection of short comedy sketches.

The young cast played different characters from week to week, dressed in costumes and performed parodies and other silly skits. The series also regularly featured musical guests, making it a mix of comedy and music aimed at children and teenagers.

Knowings joined the show during its original run and became part of an ensemble that included several young performers who later became major stars.

Her time on the series overlapped with Amanda Bynes, Kel Mitchell and Kenan Thompson, among others. Nick Cannon would also become one of the showโ€™s notable cast members.

Knowings showed her range by taking on different characters and personalities rather than playing the same role in every episode. That format gave the young performers an opportunity to experiment with comedy, impressions and exaggerated characters.

All Thatย first premiered in 1994 and became an important part of Nickelodeonโ€™s lineup. Its original run continued until 2005, lasting 10 seasons. The series was later revived by Nickelodeon in 2019 with a new generation of performers.

The success ofย All Thatย also helped launch several other Nickelodeon programs. Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell received their own sitcom,ย Kenan & Kel, which followed two best friends who regularly found themselves caught up in ridiculous situations.

Amanda Bynes went on to headlineย The Amanda Show, another sketch comedy series built around her characters and comedy. Nick Cannon later starred inย The Nick Cannon Show.

For Knowings,ย All Thatย remained the role for which many viewers remembered her most.

Her Other Acting Work

Knowings had worked in television even before joining Nickelodeon. She appeared on the childrenโ€™s television seriesย Ghostwriter, which followed a group of young friends who solved mysteries with help from a mysterious ghost that communicated through written words.

The educational mystery series originally aired on PBS in the 1990s and was designed to encourage children to read and write while following the charactersโ€™ adventures.

Years after leavingย All That, Knowings continued to work in entertainment.

She appeared in the 2009 dramaย Mother and Child, a movie starring Naomi Watts, Annette Bening and Kerry Washington. The film told several connected stories centered on mothers, daughters and adoption. Knowings also received a writing credit on the project.

She later appeared onย Sesame Street, another major childrenโ€™s television program. Knowings made three appearances on the long-running educational series between 2009 and 2011.

Those appearances connected her with another generation of young viewers more than a decade after she had become known through Nickelodeon.

Another Loss for theย All Thatย Family

Knowingsโ€™ death comes during a difficult year for people connected to the originalย All Thatย series.

More than six months earlier, former cast member Kianna Underwood died at age 33 after being struck in a hit-and-run in New York City.

Underwood had appeared onย All Thatย during the showโ€™s later years and also worked on other Nickelodeon projects.

The deaths of Knowings and Underwood are reminders of the large group of young performers who helped makeย All Thatย one of Nickelodeonโ€™s most recognizable programs.

For children growing up during the 1990s and early 2000s, the show became a Saturday-night television staple and helped introduce audiences to performers who would continue working in comedy, television and movies for decades.
