A watershed moment in Collins’ life happened in April 2009, when he needed surgery to correct displaced vertebrae in his upper neck, which he incurred while drumming on the 2007 Genesis tour.
Regrettably, the procedure caused numbness in his fingers, limiting his ability to use drumsticks unless they were tightly secured to his hands. This exacerbated his psychological state, driving him into melancholy and self-doubt.
Phil Collins officially acknowledged his battle with depression in 2010, revealing an intense internal struggle that drove him to consider the unimaginable. Nonetheless, his undying love for his children prompted him to put a stop to those terrible thoughts.
He began using a cane to help him move about in 2015, a clear testament to the difficulties he was facing.
Collins revealed the horrifying truth behind his spinal condition in an intimate discussion with Rolling Stone, saying, “The alignment of my vertebrae has led to undue pressure on my spinal cord due to my drumming posture.” This problem has grown over years of constant play. The virtuoso performer intimated quietly that this could be his swan song, with his final tour nearing an end.
“I have a strong desire, but unfortunately, my grasp of a stick with this hand is severely hampered.” “Numerous physical constraints impede me,” he said with resignation, possibly his last performance on stage.

“I felt incredibly exposed,” he said, recalling the moment with genuine honesty. “The security of a drum kit had covered me throughout my life, and there was nothing except a lone microphone stand. When I stepped forward, the dynamic changed; the audio balance changed, and the experience was far from flawless.”
“I did not desire this role; I preferred to stay the drummer. Every Monday, we had a parade of aspiring musicians, and I would teach them the craft. While working on ‘A Trick of the Tail,’ I trained them in classics like ‘Firth of Fifth,’ I surprised them all by outperforming them.”
It grew into a reflective question: Does this individual embody the essence of our group? Could he fit in with our values? Surprisingly, the adventure ended with me at the helm.”
Phil Collins’ independent ventures as a solo artist began in the early 1980s, confirming his status as one of the era’s most formidable vocalists. This reputation has survived the test of time.
A spectacular testimonial to his dedication and compassion appeared at the famed Wembley Stadium during the pioneering Live Aid event, which raised over $150 million in famine relief contributions for afflicted African nations.
