Rapper Claims Discrimination After Lyft Driver Refuses Ride

A well-known rapper is taking legal steps against a ridesharing company after experiencing a refusal of service because of her size. The rapper, Dajua Blanding, also known as Dank Demoss, claims that a Lyft driver declined to provide her a ride, citing that she wouldn’t fit comfortably in his vehicle. This incident led Blanding to file a lawsuit, alleging discrimination.

The incident took place on January 18, when Blanding requested a Lyft to attend a family gathering in the Detroit area. As she approached the vehicle, which arrived after approximately 10 to 15 minutes, the situation quickly took a turn she wasn’t anticipating.

In a TikTok video shared by Blanding, she can be heard having a conversation with the driver who politely claims his car can’t accommodate her. “What makes you think I can’t fit in this car?” Blanding questions the Honda Civic driver. After some back-and-forth, the driver mentions, “To be more specific with you, I’ve got very tired tires,” attempting to explain his concerns.

When Blanding asks, “What I got to do with your tires?” the driver points at the backseat and mentions the lack of space. The encounter ended with the driver canceling the ride and driving off, leaving Blanding unable to attend her relative’s gathering. Feeling insulted and unfairly treated, she decided to pursue legal action.

‘Too Big to Fit’

On January 27, Blanding officially filed a lawsuit against both Lyft and the driver, stating that her civil rights were infringed. The accusations detail how the driver attempted to drive away by locking his vehicle as Blanding approached. She claims this refusal was solely based on the assumption that she was “too big to fit” in the backseat, and the driver’s tires couldn’t bear her weight.

The driver suggested that Blanding should opt for a Lyft XL, which can accommodate more passengers and potentially offer more room. However, Blanding disagrees, arguing, “I don’t never have to order an Uber [Lyft] XL,” unveiling her expectation of a standard ride sufficing.

‘Discrimination’

Blanding’s attorney, John Marko, emphasizes that refusing service due to weight is akin to refusing based on race or religion. “Discrimination of any kind should never be tolerated in our society,” he asserts. Another attorney, Zach Runyan, warned of the potential dangers if Blanding had been stranded seeking shelter, expressing gratitude she was safely outside her home when the incident occurred.

Car Was Too Small

People on social media shared diverse perspectives about the situation, with many considering issues of safety and vehicle mechanics. Some users defended the driver’s actions, suggesting safety as a legitimate reason. “The car was obviously too small, and safety concerns were reasonable,” commented one person, observing the possible vehicle damage from extra weight.

Another user supported the driver’s decision, maintaining that “it wasn’t discrimination,” as cars can only safely hold a certain amount of weight. A third commenter felt the lawsuit was unwarranted, citing the driver’s manner as polite and within rights according to Lyft policies. “Taking a man’s livelihood because he said ‘no thank you’ is unreasonable,” opined the commenter.

A self-identified big, beautiful woman (BBW) shared her insight: “Lyft drivers can cancel rides, and I always choose an XL ride for comfort. It’s only logical when considering additional room needed.”

Emotional Distress

Blanding is seeking compensation for various damages, including stress, humiliation, and emotional distress, affecting her daily life and mental health. Beyond emotional aspects, she is also requesting coverage for legal fees and court expenditures.

Lyft issued a statement condemning discrimination, underscoring the importance of treating everyone with equal respect. Their community guidelines clearly forbid harassment or discrimination, aligning with a belief in mutual kindness.

As this case unfolds, it could potentially influence operational protocols within rideshare services. This issue highlights ongoing discussions about fairness and accommodations for all customers.
