Reba McEntire makes surprising confession about son Shelby
The 67-year-old country legend is so proud of her grown-up son
Reba McEntire, the beloved country music star, recently shared some heartfelt insights about her relationship with her son, Shelby, in a candid interview.
Reba, who is now 67, has always been a devoted mother. She revealed a personal strategy she adopted while raising Shelby, who is now 32. Growing up, Reba was adamant about not allowing Shelby to win at games, believing it would teach him important life lessons and prevent him from turning into what she called a “spoiled brat.” This approach was influenced by her upbringing in Chockie, Oklahoma.
Reba told People magazine, “I made sure to play games with Shelby without letting him win. It’s important to learn through challenges. I always told him, ‘I love you dearly, but I also want others to like you. So, no spoiled behavior!’”
It seems Reba’s guidance paid off, as her son Shelby is known for his down-to-earth nature despite their family’s fame. Reba proudly mentioned that Shelby, who has ADHD, has made significant strides in personal development. “He struggled with reading as a child, but now he’s devouring books. He’s read ten this year alone! His father also deserves credit for Shelby’s achievements,” she beamed.
Reba is looking forward to reuniting with Shelby and his wife, Marissa Branch, in Nashville soon.
In addition to Shelby, Reba considers her stepchildren with deep affection. She was initially a stepmother to the sons of her first husband, Charlie Battles. Despite their 1987 divorce, she remains close to Lance and Coty Battles.
Following her marriage to music manager Narvel Blackstock in 1989, she embraced his children, Shawna, Brandon, and Chassidy Blackstock, as her own. Reba has expressed in the past that she doesn’t see them as stepchildren, but rather as her own, stating in a 2010 interview, “They’re all my kids.”
Reba’s family life is as rich and fulfilling as her musical career, and she takes great joy in being surrounded by those she loves. Her relationships with her children and stepchildren showcase her commitment to family and the values she holds dear.
As Reba continues to share her journey, her story remains an inspiration to many, reminding us all of the strength and warmth that family bonds can provide.
