Kristin Pitzen, who worked at Newport Mesa School District located in Orange County, shared a TikTok video explaining that she took down the American flag because it made her feel ‘uncomfortable.’ In the video, she humorously mentioned having packed the flag away but couldn’t find it.

During the Pledge of Allegiance in her class, Pitzen explained that she allowed her students the freedom to decide whether they wanted to stand and recite the words of the pledge. She noted she gives them the choice – to participate or not.

This incident sparked particularly strong reactions when a student, noticing the absence of the American flag, asked where they should look while pledging. Pitzen jokingly suggested they could turn their attention to the pride flag in the room instead.
