The 14-year-olds became Britain’s youngest parents

In 2010, two young teenagers, April Webster and Nathan Fishbourne, became parents and captured the attention of the UK. Their journey into parenthood at just 14 years old sparked significant public interest and discussions. Let’s explore their journey and see where they are today.

The Beginning of Their Story

April and Nathan were classmates at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly, South Wales, when their casual teenage romance unexpectedly turned into something much larger. April discovered she was going to have a baby the day before her 14th birthday, a revelation that echoed through their families, shocking everyone involved.

For a while, April kept the news of their relationship from her parents out of embarrassment. Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron, a retired trucker, initially reacted with anger, concerned about the seriousness of their situation. Ron remarked, “I had a real go at him and told him he had been stupid. But we can’t undo what has happened and will now accept Jamie into our family. There’s no way we’ll turn our backs on him.”

Support from Family

Faced with such a unique situation, both sets of grandparents prepared themselves to support the young couple. April’s mother, Maria, made it clear that they would back April’s decision regarding the pregnancy. Jamie’s entry into the world in November 2010 was dramatic. Born via cesarean and with a malformed oesophagus, his start was anything but easy. Thankfully, after some early challenges, Jamie was well enough to go home after just 11 days in the hospital.

The media eventually caught wind of Jamie’s story when he was around four weeks old, by which time he had settled into life at April’s parents’ home. April shared a room with her sister Robyn, who was also instrumental in helping care for the newborn. Nathan lived a few miles away with his own family.

The Ups and Downs

Despite their tender age and the complex circumstances, April was determined to excel in her role as a mother. She dedicated herself to giving Jamie a good life, saying, “Jamie wasn’t planned, but I’m going to be a great mum for him. He’s perfect and I’m going to give him everything he ever wants.” Initially, the young couple attempted to co-parent, with Nathan suggesting a shared arrangement where Jamie would live with each of them for parts of the week. However, April revealed they were taking a “cooling off period” and was uncertain about their future together.

Life Later On

In the years that followed, April and Nathan grew apart, ultimately ending their relationship. By 2014, April had moved on and was focusing on raising Jamie, her education plans set aside as she concentrated on her role as a mother.
