In the new documentary Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Patti Scialfa, the talented wife of legendary musician Bruce Springsteen and a key member of the E Street Band, bravely shared her personal struggle with multiple myeloma, a rare form of cancer she was diagnosed with in 2018.
The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and provided an emotional insight into the effects of Scialfa’s condition on her ability to tour and perform.
Scialfa joined the E Street Band in 1984, but she’s also an accomplished solo artist with multiple albums under her belt. Throughout her illustrious music career, she has collaborated with renowned names such as Don Cherry, Narda Michael Walden, David Johansen, and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes. In addition to her musical talents, she is also a talented songwriter and a producer of movies and documentaries.
A Love Story and a Family
Scialfa and Springsteen have been happily married since 1991 and together they have three children: sons Evan and Samuel, and daughter Jessica. Their family bond is strong, and their love and support for each other are evident in both their personal and professional lives.
Facing Challenges with Courage
Speaking about the challenges she has encountered since her diagnosis, Scialfa remarked, “It felt so good to be back on stage,” reflecting on her limited performances. Her condition has significantly impacted her ability to tour due to the effect on her immune system. She has to be cautious about her choices and destinations when it comes to her performances. Despite these obstacles, Scialfa remains positive and determined.
“Every once in a while, I come to a show or two and I can sing a few songs on stage, and that’s been a treat,” she added. Her occasional appearances allow her to share her incredible talent with her fans, even though her health condition necessitates careful consideration.
A Candid Glimpse into Their Relationship
Although Scialfa couldn’t attend the premiere of the documentary, she revealed that it provides fans with a unique glimpse into the deep bond she shares with Bruce Springsteen. It allows viewers to witness “a side of our relationship that you usually don’t get to see.” The documentary will be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ starting October 25th, and it promises to be a heartwarming and insightful experience.
“Being back onstage with Bruce is a blast,” Scialfa expressed enthusiastically. “Every night on this tour gives the band a chance to celebrate.”
