Her life was on the line, and she did the one thing that could save her: She ordered pizza.

A woman in Florida gets help out of a dangerous situation thanks to an unexpected source: Pizza Hut.

The events unfolded when Cheryl Treadway, from Highlands County, Florida, found herself relying on her cell phone and a familiar place to help her out of a dire situation.

On May 4, 2015, Cheryl Treadway used her phone’s Pizza Hut app to place what seemed like a regular order for a small hand-tossed pepperoni pizza. However, there was a crucial element within that order—a discreet note alerting the store owners that she was in grave danger and needed assistance.

Treadway and her children were being held at knifepoint by her boyfriend, Ethan Nickerson. The astute local Pizza Hut employees recognized the distress signal and promptly contacted the police, leading to the safe rescue of Treadway and the arrest of Nickerson.

Domestic Violence: An Unfortunate Reality for Many Women

Treadway’s hopeful resolution is one beacon in a dark reality—yearly, an estimated four million women endure domestic violence. Statistics from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence illustrate a stark picture where 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experience physical violence from current or former partners.

A Reminder of an Important Message

This incident echoes a powerful anti-domestic violence PSA aired during the Super Bowl, where a woman strategically calls the police under the guise of ordering a pizza.

The organization’s campaign may have its imperfections, but the underlying message remains critical and undeniable.

This scenario actually occurred in real life, as recounted by a 911 operator on the internet, reminding us of the importance of perceptiveness in crisis situations.

Resources and Support for Those Seeking to Break Free

The National Domestic Violence Hotline offers comprehensive resources, specially crafted for individuals striving to escape abusive situations, including an invaluable safety planning tool. It features detailed strategies, helpful tips for leaving detrimental environments, and crucial legal information.

For those not entrenched in these relationships, leaving might appear a straightforward decision. Unfortunately, for many survivors, it’s much more complex and fraught with obstacles.

This reality underscores why keen observation from 911 operators, law enforcement, and the community is so essential. Their understanding could be the turning point in ensuring safety and providing escape routes for victims.

What if the Pizza Hut team hadn’t contacted the police during Treadway’s ordeal? What if the PSA’s operator missed the covert plea for help? Fortunately, vigilant and quick-thinking individuals intervened and made a difference. However, we must acknowledge that not all cries for help are as overt as flares in the night. They could be whispers easily missed if we’re not listening closely.

Fortunately, there are those who listen and act diligently. They pay attention even to subtle cues, and by doing so, they contribute to saving lives.
